Elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo
On December 20-21, 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) held general and presidential elections with a voting process marked by controversy. Aidprofen – a non-profit organization promoting and defending women´s rights in the eastern DRC – participated in monitoring the elections. Aidprofen is led by pro-democracy activist Passy Mubalama, a member of Forum 2000‘s International Coalition for Democratic Renewal (ICDR) and Democratic Solidarity Africa (DSA). The organization deployed 45 observers in the eastern region of the country and documented numerous irregularities in a report it issued on the elections. Democratic Solidarity Africa has been following the electoral process in the DRC and continues to monitor the situation closely.
Article | Taiwan´s Election and Coming Challenges
More than 71 percent of eligible voters in Taiwan cast a vote on January 13 to decide whether to give the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) a third consecutive mandate or to hand over government to the two opposition parties. According to J. Michael Cole, member of the International Coalition for Democratic Renewal (ICDR), the result of the election, which was held under a sustained threat by China, demonstrated yet again that coercion by Beijing is incapable of deterring the voters in Taiwan from deciding who will govern them.
Democratic Resilience Facing Autocratic Influence in Latin America: Recommendations on the EU’s Potentialities and Challenges
In this discussion paper, Democratic Solidarity Latin America (DSLA) members Armando Chaguaceda (Mexico) and Max Povse (Argentina) analyze the challenges of democratic resilience in Latin America, assess the EU’s response thereof, and issue recommendations for its governing bodies to improve the focus and quality of the aid that is already offered to the region’s struggling democratic governments and CSOs fighting autocratic regimes.
