News! | 27th Forum 2000 Conference in Prague
The 2023 conference, to take place in Prague on October 15‐17, will be held under the theme “For a Democratic World Order”. The discussions, which will consider how democracies and democrats can work together to face common challenges, will revolve along the following thematic areas:
- Democracies Retaking the Initiative
- Technology and Democracy
- Promoting Democracy in an Unfree Environment
- Thematic and Regional Focus
The conference will also host, in cooperation with the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a second edition of the Forum for Ukraine. Policy Brief | The 8 Challenges for Democracy in the Western Balkans
“The Western Balkans is an area that could blow up in a very nasty way in the future” warned political scientist Francis Fukuyama at the 26th Forum 2000 Conference held in Prague in 2022. Taking this warning very seriously, we at the Forum 2000, the Association for International Affairs (AMO), and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, decided to dig deeper into the situation and challenges faced by democracy in that region.

73rd anniversary of the execution of Milada Horáková
This year, on June 27, marked the 73rd anniversary of the execution of Milada Horáková by the Czechoslovak Communists. This date is recorded as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Communist Regime. Forum 2000 pays our deepest respect to Milada Horáková’s bright example as well as to all courageous dissidents and victims of totalitarianism.
International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
On 12 December 1997, by resolution 52/149, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
We at Forum 2000 call on all international organizations, governments, civil society, and individuals everywhere to unite in support of the victims of torture around the world.

GLOBSEC Trends 2023 | GLOBSEC | “As Russia’s aggression against Ukraine wages on for a second year, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) finds itself on the right side of history but divided. Most countries remain steadfast in its support for EU and NATO membership, and recognise the inherent threats posed by autocratic regimes to the region’s security. Most CEE societies are taking cue from their political leaders that have sought to openly distance themselves from autocratic regimes and assume a more decisive and vocal role on the international scene”.
Inter-American Commission held the Government of Cuba responsible for the assassination of pro-democracy leaders Oswaldo Payá and Harold Cepero | Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights | “In its decision, the IACHR considered that there were serious and sufficient indications to conclude that State agents directly participated in the deaths of Payá and Cepero. The IACHR also stated that Cuba was responsible for violations of the right to due process and judicial guarantees of Ángel Carromero, a Spanish citizen and witness, who was also present in the car crash that killed Payá and Cepero.
