EU± // Europeanisation in the times of corona pandemics

The debate will take place on Thursday, 30th of April, from 14:30 to 16:00 online on Facebook of EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy and Department of European Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University. You can submit your questions to our speakers through comments at the live stream.

The corona pandemic has affected all countries in the European Union as well as the European institutions. This live online debate will discuss how the concept of Europeanisation helps us understand the current developments in the EU and how the Corona virus might impact the EU’s future. Has the crisis increased our understanding of how the national and European levels affect each other? Should we expect the EU and multilateralism to be strengthened in light of the crisis, or will the Member States grow apart, weakening both themselves and the institutions through which they stand the best chance of managing globalization and global challenges?

Can the corona virus pandemic offer any new perspectives on the public debate surrounding Europeanisation? How has the EU and its role been understood in the public debate in different countries? Will it have a lasting impact on how the public and the political elites see European integration? Which developments that we have witnessed so far can we consider the most important in terms of the future development in the EU? Does the concept of Europeanisation offer any hints regarding future developments? These questions and more will be discussed by:

  • Heidi Maurer, University of Bristol, United Kingdom
  • Kristi Raik, Estonian Foreign Policy Institute, Estonia
  • Paolo Graziano, University of Padova, Italy
  • Moderation: Tomáš Weiss, Charles University, Czech Republic
