Prague Rally Highlights Fears of Rising Populism

Czech president’s rare incursion into domestic politics reveals growing social rifts.

Asharp dispute at the highest levels of Czech politics has moved beyond institutional corridors and into the public sphere.

The conflict centers on a clash between President Petr Pavel and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, of the populist-nationalist governing coalition led by Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The dispute focuses on the nomination of a controversial neophyte politician to the cabinet.

The public mood in Prague and other Czech cities where support for the affable president is strongest took a dark turn after October’s elections that returned the billionaire, euroskeptic Babis to office.

The very public quarrel over the proposal to have Filip Turek head the Environment Ministry helped reignite distrust of Babis among the liberals and young voters who helped Pavel defeat Babis in the 2023 presidential election, sparking a huge demonstration in support of the president.
