On the occasion of the second anniversary of the disputed Iranian presidential elections and the harsh crackdown against peaceful protest that followed, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and People in Need cordially invite you to the film screening „Not an illusion” (2009) by Torang Abedian.
The film will be followed by a discussion with journalist Omid Nikfarjam about the freedom of arts in present-day Iran and Iranian cinematography.
Synopsis: Sara is a 21 years old Iranian woman who wants to be a singer. Yet according to the rules in Iran, women should not sing solo in public. Some clerics say that God doesn‘t want to hear a woman‘s voice even at prayers. But Sara is determined – she was a champion gymnast before she became disabled in
a freak accident. She joins the Piccolo band as a back up singer, even though everything about the performance must be approved by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. The film follows Sara‘s battles over the years as she struggles to achieve her dream.
