V4 IN 2014: LACK OF COHESION OR EXCESSIVE EXPECTATIONS?
In the wake of the Ukraine crises, the Visegrad Group was not able find a strong common position. Many were disillusioned and claimed that this cooperation format has exhausted its potential and is not viable anymore. Poland had expected much more support for its hawkish stance towards Russia; the Czechs had introduced different Central European cooperation concepts which excluded some V4 members and the Hungarian Prime Minister delivered a speech in which he underlined inspiration from ‘illiberal democracies’. Meanwhile, Slovakia, which has been holding the V4 Presidency since July, put forward a very ambitious programme.
Has the Visegrad Group fallen into the trap of its own excessive expectations?
Will it survive the lack of cohesion over Ukraine?
What is the view from Warsaw, Budapest and Bratislava?
What are the prospects of the V4 in 2014?
