Forum 2000 condemns the persecution of Vladimir Kara-Murza

Vladimir Kara-Murza, a member of the Forum 2000 International Coalition for Democratic Renewal (ICDR), a Russian opposition leader and a prominent human rights activist, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Moscow court for “treason and other offenses”. Forum 2000 strongly condemns the sentencing for denouncing the invasion of Ukraine. We express our solidarity with Mr. Kara-Murza, his family and his just struggle. This conviction is unjustified and only confirms how important his work is.

Forum 2000 contribution | How can Europe help the next phase of the Summit for Democracy?

What role should the European Union play in global cooperation for democracy? “After a period of creeping external and internal pressure on democracies, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a more assertive China have made the global geopolitical landscape clearer. In this context, closer democratic coordination is quite clearly needed”, says Jakub Klepal, Executive Director of Forum 2000 Foundation.

The Forum 2000 editor’s pick

A selection of essential articles, opinions and ideas from the Forum 2000 network.

Vladimir Kara-Murza: Our Conscience and the Living With Freedom | Tribute to Vladimir Kara-Murza by Nicolas Tenzer | “The criminal against humanity Putin wants to destroy Ukraine and annihilate the Ukrainian people, but he wants to suppress all those in Russia who represent dignity and courage, which he will never have”.

What China’s Global Security Initiative Tells Us About Its Strategic Engagement with Latin America | By Evan Ellis | “Chinese engagement with Latin America may be mostly about commerce, but it is nonetheless strategic in its character. Its new Global Security Initiative (GSI) openly highlights the explicitly military and other strategic dimensions of its approach toward Latin America and other parts of the world”.

In the Western Balkans, the West is trying to push Russia out | By Agon Maliqi | “Even as fighting rages on in Ukraine, a less obvious struggle is taking place between Russia and the West elsewhere on the European Union’s periphery. With war draining its resources, Moscow has been less able to project power beyond its borders — and Western powers are moving to take advantage of the vacuum. That’s what’s happening right now in the Western Balkans…”
